Google PageRank is a numeric algorithm depicted on a scale of 1 to 10 that represents the relevance and importance of a web page on the Internet. It is important as it determines and governs the web page ’s ranking in search results. The page rank of a web page denotes two important aspects:

The number of links appearing on a web page

The quality of the linking sites

The Google PageRank runs from 0 to 10. While a Pagerank or PR 0 denotes that while Google is not aware that the web page exists, a PR 10 is the best and reserved for the very best such as Google.com, Microsoft.com, Adobe.com, Facebook.com, CNN.com and Macromedia.com. Page Rank 1 to 4 indicate that a website is getting indexed by Google but there is a huge scope for improvement. Page Rank 5 to 9 indicate that websites have been at work as far as their SEO is concerned and are slowly rising up to top search engine rankings . PageRank 8, 9 and 10 are the most difficult to achieve and in SEO parlance a PR 7 is generally considered a very decent rank. Websites with higher page rank are thus valued much more highly by Google compared to the less established ones with lower Page Rank.

Google believes that when one web page links to another, it casts a vote for the other page it is linking to. More number of votes cast makes the other web page more popular and important. The importance of the vote is also determined by the value or importance of the web page casting the vote. Google takes into account all these votes while calculating the PageRank for that website.

Google PageRank is one of the many ingredients that go into making a robust SEO strategy. Search engine optimization must evolve constantly in order to boost the popularity of web pages and websites. Google’s smart way of analysing a website’s popularity and importance and ranking it on the web on the basis of its Page Rank has compelled many small and mid sized businesses to focus on their SEO strategies and mould them to achieve higher search rankings.

So while these businesses may work on their keywords and traffic as part of their overall SEO plan, they cannot ignore the role of inbound links to their websites that can make them truly popular on the web. An inbound link from a website with higher Google PageRank on the home page of another website can boost the latter’s organic search engine ranking significantly. In terms of quality votes received from websites with higher Google PageRank, a website indeed has nothing to lose!
