Building Backlinks | Article Marketing
Building backlinks is the king of off page SEO. Ask anyone who has been at this game for a little while, and they will tell you the same thing, it’s all about the backlinks. Not just any old backlinks but backlinks from high PR webpages. Just don’t go neglecting your on page SEO as well as the quality of content on your site in some massive link building campaign.
If the site is new, and you don’t know much about acquiring backlinks, then building too many at first will do more harm than good to your site most likely. Everything needs to be natural in the eyes of the search engines, so if you have a site that is only a week old and you buy five thousand backlinks to your site, it could very well keep you from ranking for a while.
Two things are going on with this scenario. First, if you do decide to blast your new site with tons of backlinks, that in itself looks suspicious and raises a big red flag letting Google know you are trying to rig the system so to say.
Second, if you don’t continue to build backlinks at the same pace (Link Velocity), it again looks unnatural and that won’t do anything to help you.
It all comes down to adding backlinks on a consistent basis as well as adding quality content to your site on a consistent basis.
I bet you’re tired of hearing me say “Quality Content” aren’t you? Sorry to say, it’s vitally important. The more your audience likes what you have to say, the longer they are going to stay on your site and continue reading other articles you have written.
Not only does this keep your audience engaged, but it lowers your bounce rate. A lower bounce rate lets Google know that your site has something to offer and people must like your site. Naturally, you will move up in the rankings for this.
That’s one of the many factors they take into consideration when figuring out where to rank your site.
Article marketing has been around for a long time, and should be incorporated into your overall link building campaign. It’s really easy to do.
First you need to set up an account with some of the various article directories found around the web. Ezine articles is no doubt the biggest and most well known article directory out there. The only problem is they take a while to actually publish your article, if they accept it at all, whereas many other article directories get your article up and running on their sites much quicker.
Ezine articles though is still considered the best. Sign up to as many of them as you want and after your account is approved, you can start posting articles.
Most of these sites allow you to place a couple of links in your bio. So capitalize on this and add whatever keywords you want to rank for as the anchor text in the bio box.
On a side note, if you intend to have the article on your site, make sure and post it there before adding them to any article directories. Don’t worry about anything you’ve heard about duplicate content. It most likely isn’t true. Google considers this to be “Syndicated Content’ and it will choose whatever version it feels is the most relevant and place it in the results page.
So many people go on about the importance of spinning the article, and spinning the title, and spinning the bio…
Like this is somehow going to help you rank better. Article marketing can definitely bring you traffic if you write a good article, but on the other hand we don’t want our article on say articlesbase to outrank our money site right? Otherwise what would be the point?
Mostly we just want backlinks. If you write a killer article that ranks high in the search results for a good keyword but you didn’t add it to your site prior to syndicating it around the internet, you would be missing out on traffic landing directly on your site.
Personally, I add one link pointing to the post or page I just wrote with the anchor text being the name of the post, and a second link that points back to my homepage with the anchor text being whatever I want that site to rank for. Kind of like killing two birds with one stone.
I’m pretty sure there’s software on the market that will automatically spin and submit literally hundreds of spun articles to thousands of directories. I don’t have any experience with them so I can’t really provide and feedback there, but if that seems like something you want to do you can do more research. I would be careful though, until you know exactly what you’re doing. I don’t want to be blamed for giving bad advice, I just wanted you to be aware of what’s out there.
As I mentioned in my article: Google Is Cracking Down On So Called Black Hat Link Building Techniques, it’s becoming more and more important to make sure you’re actually offering something of value to people through your website.
There are many opinions on what the best way to tackle article marketing are. Some people stick to the notion that submitting hundreds of differently spun articles to various article directories is the only way to get ahead of your competitors. Their argument is that they are acquiring many different backlinks from a ton of different URL’s.
I can see their point of view, because Google’s algorithms definitely take into account the range of different URLs that a site receives backlinks from. The more and varied the better.
The bottom line though is to just start submitting your articles and posts to at least a few different article directories and social bookmarking sites. We will get into the social bookmarking sites in the next lesson.
